How zkSync Era Works
zkSync Era operates as a Layer 2 scaling solution, which is part of a group of solutions known as rollups. Specifically, zkSync Era is a ZK rollup, with ZK standing for zero knowledge. This cryptographic term refers to the ability of one party to prove something is true to another party without revealing any other information.
Rollups function by bundling or ‘rolling up’ off-chain transactions into a smaller transaction that is then sent to Layer 1. By sending these transactions back to Layer 1, rollups inherit the security and finality of the Ethereum blockchain. There are two types of rollups: Zero knowledge (ZK) and Optimistic. In this section, we will focus on ZK rollups.
For each batch of transactions, an off-chain prover generates a cryptographic proof (called a SNARK in the case of zkSync Era) that validates the transactions. Although generating the proof is computationally intensive, verifying its validity is much simpler. This ease of verification allows the proof to be sent to Layer 1 and checked by a smart contract, enabling near-frictionless transfers between Layer 1 and Layer 2.
